A Different View

After months of sketching the same scene when I pick up my groceries, yesterday I turned my head and drew a different view. This janky tree and that weird carwash behind it just called out to be sketched. I did this very quickly, and was happy to have my fat pen back in my purse as it is the most fun pen for quick sketches.

Later in the afternoon I ran another important errand, and actually planned for sitting and sketching for about ten minutes.
Last week I went to an appointment and thought - a new location! I will sketch it! But I noticed that every time I go out, I feel like I'm in a big rush. Partly it's because I want to get home and wash my hands. Partly it's because I'm running to pick up groceries (or whichever errand) on a break from work - one way that pandemic life hasn't changed.

When I sketched these trees, I felt woefully out of practice at quickly sketching a subject that is not in front of me all the time. It helped me see that I do need to start planning for going out and sketching. I miss sketching random things in the world.

Of course I'm going to keep sketching this building, too!

A practical tip: If I'm thinking I might have time to get a sketch in along with an errand, I always sketch first. That way my hands are clean while I'm sketching, and I can go home right after the errand to wash. But I also carry sanitizer in my purse and also in my car. And alcohol wipes! I think you need to keep at least one of these in your car!

Sketching first is a good approach! I have sanitizer in my car, alcohol wipes in my purse, and more sanitizer in my purse :D Even with all of that, I want to go home and wash my hands - I think I just feel safer at home. But I also need to start leaving the house just to sketch, and that way I won't worry about touching anything or coming into contact with other people like I do when I run errands.
