Looking Forward, Looking Back

What's new for 2019
Are you excited about 2019? I am excited for the new year more than I usually am because I already have so much art stuff lined up! Two shows, at least two talks, lots of teaching, some professional development, and some awesome trips! And so. much. sketching.
I'm already working on a lot of the work for 2019, including rethinking my philosophy on sketching. Not changing it, but building on why I do it, why and how I teach it, and why I think everyone should and can do it.
I'm thinking about the "why and how" of sketching while thinking about teaching more sketching workshops - something I've been thinking about since the USk Symposium in Porto. I'm reading up on creativity and on the mental and physical benefits of sketching, drawing, and doodling for talks coming up in 2019, and I'm working hard to bring this all together to share with other people who love sketching, or who do not yet know that they love sketching.

Here's a list of what I did in 2018:

• Showed Two Stories of Iceland - paintings and drawings - at Crosstown Arts (right - installation shot by Chip Pankey)
• Art talk about show at Crosstown Arts
• Art talk at Houston High
• Taught four classes and one workshop at Flicker Street Studio
• Took a class at Flicker Street Studio
• Started a new job
• Attended the Urban Sketchers Symposium in Porto, Portugal (below - sketch of Portugal)

• Attended the STC Conference in Orlando
• Went on a road trip with Toby (right - South Seas Tiki Bar in Charleston, SC)
• Went to Mardi Gras with eight of my favorite people
• Went to Portland, Maine
• Went to my Mom's in Naples, FL, twice
• Worked with Kristen Haas Curtis to create By the Bones, a diary comic game
• Filled four and a half books with diary comics​
• Made 15 to 20 other not-diary comics (below)​

• Filled about seven sketchbooks
• Started new paintings for a show in 2019 (top image - in progress)
• Created an illustration for Edible Memphis (right)
• Participated in a group show at Flicker Street Studio (below - new work for the show - Eclipse, acrylic on old wallpaper, 2018)
• Read 18 books
